What's the ending about?

He went back to the park to hang himself?

reply

That was my interpretation too. I'm thinking from seeing how much Antoine and Blanche worked out, that maybe he finally realized his life purpose is to see other people in love. Almost like a Cupid of sorts. So, like the next person (male, ideally) who will save him will really fall in love with Louis' fake ex, which I'm just hypothezing could be Christine.

Of course, I'm just guessing.

Anyone else have an idea?

I just think that this whole scenario came full circle. Can't imagine that Louis would consider himself to be a cupid...he was way too depressed (bi-polar?)a character to even consider that. I mean...let's face it...Louis was worse off than the first time he tried to hang himself. Someone else got the love of his life. RIP.

I agree that Louis was happily passing the hanging tree.
I thought he might end up with Antiones ex, or at least dating the girl at the restaurant. but that would be too "hollywood".

I thought it was odd that all three men (Blanchs guy friend, as well as Louis and Antione), used flowers to give to the owner of a flower shop; kinda shows how clueless men can be.

The most hilarious scene was Louis' interview for the job at the restaurant. His face had so many expressions. ( reminds me of Nathan Lane trying to act like a man in "La Cage" ) I could see a very noticable change in his appearance through the progress of the film. His entire personna changed; posture, eye contact, cleaner clothes, of course the hair, and he finally smiled toward the end of the movie.

My final feelings, Antoine deserved the girl in the end for his rescue feat, and Louis, having been rescued, went on to live a life of self assurance, perhaps alone for a while, to love himself, before he can love another.

thats my 2 sense

I think Louis finally realized that life was worth living. He realized Antoine and Blanche would be happier together, and he realized what a good friend Antoine was and felt he could re-pay him this way. And also, as happens with most men who obssess over some ex-girlfriend, he realized that he doesn't really love her anyway. I'm sure him going to the park at the end of the movie is just symbollic.

At first I thought it odd that Louis would set Antoine up to be with Blanche but then also wreck his car, but then I remembered how fickle and strange Blanche was and I think that Louis really wasn't doing Antoine a favor in the long run. He had taken Antoine's place and now has a healthy self-esteem and perhaps sees Blance for the problem she really was. Once Blance messes with Antoine's head for a while he may be looking for Louis to save him. Just my take, for what it's worth.

I think Louis realised he was gay and that Blanche just didn't look enough like a man to satisfy him. That's why he totalled Antoine's car. You may have noticed that Antoine slept downstairs after he betrays Louis' trust by kissing Blanche. In french culture, a man who sleeps outside is called a Pede de banc - a gay bench - and I think this proves my theory. Antoine was gay before he met Christine, hence his regression after he betrays Louis. Also, a wine taster in French is called un suceur - a sucker - and I think the symbolism here is pretty obvious.

Hope this has helped.

Interesting thoughts, I thought too thay he was going to hang himself

I don't think he went back to hang himself, no. He looked too content, and considering the focus placed on the tree as he walked by it I'd say it was more a case of coming full circle than anything quite that morbid

No! Louise moved on. He recognised how much Antoine had helped him and that he was now in a better place. But also that Antoine and Blance had fallen for each other. It was a positive end to a little love comedy - no need to look for dark shadows.
