Editing

I don't know what I think about this film. There was about 5 minutes that absolutely thrilled me though. When Ismael is talking to the female nurse about "China Girl" and there is this absolutely amazing jump cutting from different angles around them with the two actors seeming to get closer and farther apart in one of the most sensual scenes that I've seen in a film. Then when he goes outside I remember being impressed by the scene with the "China Girl" and Ismael but can't remember why exactly. It must have been the abrupt distress that the previous scene caused.
Ismael's story was without a doubt the most interesting and I would've loved to have seen more. But perhaps without Nora's (?) story it wouldn't have felt so good.

Favorite scenes anyone?

I don't know how to feel about it either. Definitely overlong, but in terms of the editing I did like the fragmented feel to the conversations. I am not sure how well the moods complemented each other, Nora's scenes were just a bit too intense to suddenly start laughing over wacky Ismail. Favorite scene would be the grocery store hold up, ha.

Deneuve was wasted.

The editing in this film was amazing. Very "busy," but perfect for this material. For me, "Kings and Queen" is that rare "flawed masterpiece" -- a film that goes on a bit too long, has some relatively dull/confusing scenes, tells too many stories...and that's why I love it. I can watch it when I'm depressed or happy, with people or alone, have time to watch all 2 1/2 hours in one sitting or just want to re-watch a few favorite scenes.

The final conversation between Ismael and Elias is probably my favorite scene.
