What was the son doing in Africa?

Did he even join the CIA?
He just talked about wanting to join, but its never followed up on.
But the kid had a trustfund, he did what most liberal teens with money do, travel the world one hotel room at the time.

It was my understanding he did join , was in Africa then the Germans fixed it so an agent of theirs who was a female from africa used the son and at the same time have something to hold over the fathers head to be used when the Germans had need of a favor at some point in time .
