"Life has been full of surprises"

- You once said to me you were afraid your life was already planned out for you. Are you doing what you want to do?
- Life has been full of surprises.

This exchange between Laura and Edward (Damon) stuck with me though I can't quite put my hand on what is meant there by Edward - did he answer the question? - or indeed what's the significance of this little dialogue in the script. I just got the feeling as I was watching that it was a key moment, a rare instance of introspection for Edward, meeting with a person who at one point was close to him, years down the road.

Any ideas?
