'The Hand'- WKW's best work other than 'In the Mood For Love'?

I've seen all of his movies but 'As Tears Go By' and 'Happy Together' and I'm a huge fan.. but I think he's done some of his best work with shorter movies, such as 'The Hand'. The shorter length works well for his heavily emotionally ambient style.

What do you guys think?

He should work with Gong Li more often

I did not like Bluberry nights.

I didn't even know of the existence of "The Hand" until I ran into Eros. I wouldn't have bought it if I had not seen Wong's name on the cover. (Not a big fan of Soderbergh and I've never seen anything by Antonioni, and I hope this is not representative for his other films). Having seen only 2046, Blueberry Nights and In The Mood For Love, and now The Hand, I am absolutely blown away by WKW.

He really should get the attention of the big audience. I know he's pretty well know among filmlovers, but all of his work should have the same availability as any Spielberg film.

His way of telling stories and paying attention to the mood and pace of the film is not only very refreshing, but also one of the most effective ways I've ever seen.

My Chinese is not what it used to be, so I'm not gonna talk about intonation, but I've got a feeling that the actors are really really good in all the 4 films I've mentioned above. The moments that gave me the chills were not the moments where a lot was said, but where the characters looked at each other and remained silence, sometimes touched each other, while we as viewers know that they will never forget these moments in their lifes after we've walked out of the theatre.

I've been lucky enough to see all of Wong Kar Wai's films and I have to agree with you, "The Hand" certainly ranks as one of his best- and that is saying a lot. He's a great director- but I do think a shorter medium seems to fit him well. His video for DJ Shadow's "Six Days" is only five minutes long- and is still an amazing piece of art. His work for BMW Film's "The Follow" is also a great example of how well he works when his talent is reigned in a little by time constraints.

Personally I would rank "The Hand" as one of his best, behind "In the Mood for Love" and "2046" for sure- but probably tied with "Days of Being Wild."

Too bad about the very crappy "Bluberry nights"

i've watched all of WKW's films. personally i love Happy Together the most. it's not about the theme, of course, i have no prejudice for or against homosexuality. it's about the flow of it, the colors, the dialogue, the little details, everything comes together so comfortably perfectly. it's a mesmerizing masterpiece.

i think Wong is at his best when teaming up with Christopher Doyle and William Cheung Suk Ping. impeccable trio.

personally i think the reason why My Blueberry Nights didn't work so well is because the subtlety and fineness of Wong's style is lost in the seemingly awkward English script and cast.

looking forward to Wong's next production! but deep down i have a sad feeling that his prime has passed.

It was my favourite segment by far, but "In the Mood for Love" and "Happy Together" are his greatest works IMO.
