SPOILERS she had stole money from the place she had been working at. The last time she calls her friend in Florida her friend says that everyone "back home" knows she took the money and is looking for her (cops etc.)

That explains why she thought she couldn't go home throughout most of her ordeal. But at the end when she finally contacts her mother, mom tells her that they found most of the stolen money in the wrecked car, and mom covered the difference. So that meant she no longer had to go back home, and mom encouraged her to go ahead and go to Florida....
