Accent

What's going on with Alice's accent? She sounds partially...mentally challenged.

reply

I'm glad I'm not the only one that noticed this. Her accent was terrible in the film.

Not exaggerated...Alice's accent is pure Boston.

reply

Boston? At the beginning of the movie she put an X on New Hampshire on her map. Then while she was driving, she drove through Massachusettes. So we know she wasn't driving from Boston, unless she was originally from there. I thought all the accents were horrible. I'm from Tennessee, and I thought the southerners in the movie did some bad southern accents. The bad accents were a distraction for me.

reply

I'm originally from Boston and Alice and her Mom both have Massachusettes accents. New Hampshire is just over the state line. To me their accents sound dead on.

I'm still standing.

reply

I don't know enough about Massachusettes/New Hampshire accents to tell them apart, so if you say they're similar that's good enough for me! I was referring to the southern accents as bad. Judith Ivey's character is from Paducah, KY, and I guess it's possible she could be from way out in the sticks where they talk like that. It just sounded too fake to me, like she was making an effort to talk like that. But someone from that area may be better information than I do about the accents. The worst portrayal of a southern accent I have ever heard was Tony Danza trying to talk like a redneck in a Lifetime movie.

reply

i'm from boston too and that was not a boston accent. it sounded like she was trying to mimic a new york accent. but she was doing a horrible job. she would be talking normally one minute and then the next it was a horrible long island accent. if she was trying to do a boston accent she failed miserably. look for mayor menino on youtube. that's a boston accent. LMAO.

I'm from southeastern New Hampshire and I know people from Milford (where this girl supposedly comes from), and I can tell you that New Hampshire and Massachusetts have completely different accents; if anything a lot of New Hampshire tends more towards Maine than anything.

i noticed sometimes she didnt always speak in an accent.

And she's supposedly from NH in real life!

Her accent was awful, a total distraction.

"If you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best."

I though the accent was great. She came from New England. That is how they sound there? They sound like that in Main Vermont New Hampture.

that "good will hunting" boston accent is to show that she was in the lower economic class. She may have moved from boston to New hamshire but she maintained that accent. if you meet people from boston who are educated the first thing they do is lose the accent. her friend on the phone didn't have the accent. The accent forshadowed the fact that she wasn't rich. Her poverty mattered in the couples ability to control her w/out locking her in the camper.

reply

@Seanups - Thanks for the laugh. I was born & raised in Boston. I mean "real" Boston (3rd generation Charlestown); not "fake" Boston like Affleck/Damon (Cambridge). I am the daughter of a Route 128 executive (people in Boston know what that means). I was educated in private schools.

I have never attempted to lose my accent. It would never occur to me. I speak properly. English came to America through Plymouth/Boston....what you people south and west did with it is not my concern.

When someone strives to change something about their upbringing...they are ashamed of it. I couldn't be more proud of being a Bostonian.

As far as this movie, the mother's accent sounded more true to my ear.

people had questions about the accent. I thought it was deliberate attempt by the director to show that Alice wasn't rich. I ran into people in the navy who lost there local accents, do to there desire to fit in. One was from Louisiana the other was from Arkansas. there would have been preasure to speak more mid-western like on t.v. no matter where you are from. I had a cousin from Indianapolis who spoke a certain way when they moved back to cleveland. years later another cousin married a girl from Indianapolis. i went to the wedding and her whole family spoke the same way. That was the first time I realised there was an Indianapolis accent. there are just certain accents that get portrayed in american movies all the time. Bronx New york, South boston, minnisota, and southern accent come to mind. i wasn't trying to make fun of people from boston. the red sox suck though.

I live right on the line of Mass and NH, and her accent was perfect for this area.

reply

If you're from Massachusetts, I'll take your word for it, but to this outsider, the accident sounded forced. But what do I know?
