Did they really support Charlie Manson??

I seem to recall Bernardine Dhorn making some public statement in support of the grisly murder of pregnant actress Sharon Tate by members of Manson's gang back in 69. Mansons followers, holding vigil during his trial, played off those statements in trying to align the cults murderous actions with the larger revolutionary left. I dont think most Americans bought it at the time.

Boy I'd like to meet Ms. Dhorn in modern times and present her with a copy of that famous color crime scene photograph of Miss Tate lying on her living room floor, clearly pregnant and smeared with her own blood. Still think it was such a good idea Bernie???

She retracted that comment and apologised when she realised that it a rather *cough* misguided thing to say.

Like one of them mentioned, we all do stupid things when we're young. Look at some of the ill-conceived posts right here on this board -- by people with no understanding of the Vietnam War era, without wisdom enough to recognize their own gaps in knowledge.

At the time Dohrn made those comments, Manson and his gang had just been apprehended and his trial hadn't even begun yet...the full insanity of his "cause" was still unrevealed to the general public in America. By writing "pig" at the scenes of the murders, Manson hoodwinked everyone into thinking there was some kind of genuine political philosophy behind the crimes, when the truth was really more simplistically sordid.

In December of 1969 when Dohrn flippantly shot her mouth off in support of the Manson murders, the Weatherman were desperately seeking some vindication that the revolution they were attempting to instigate was about to erupt throughout the country and she impulsively seized on this crime as proof that is was.

This is very hard to read, isn't it?
