Most popular actors have actually been trying to "break through" for many, many years. Some actors are lucky and have a famous family member, or just get lucky like Katherine Heigle when she was the "break through" actor in "Grey's Anatomy" but most actors have had to play bit parts for years before finally becoming popular. I was surprised when I recognized him, too, when I recently watched "Along Came Polly" again :) But, it makes total sense.
