Why wasn't this movie shown in American theaters?

Is the reason why this movie didn't make it into American Movie theaters is because it was to much of a slap in the face for white American's. Or was it for the unconventional way it was filmed.

The film was shown in American theaters, just not the big cineplexes. It showed just down the street from me at a local 'art theatre' (I live in Illinois). Lots of movies, especially independent and foreign films such as Manderlay, are shown in smaller theaters but never make it to the big chains because of fears that they won't bring in enough money. And truth be told, although I think Manderlay is a great film and there are certainly people who enjoy this type of movie, it probably would have flopped quite badly with the general American public, not so much because it's offensive, but because it's 'boring.'
