fullscreen / widescreen?

This TV movie has been shown on various UK channels over the years but always in 4:3 aspect ratio, but it looks like it was filmed in 16:9 widescreen. Because of that, the picture is compressed horizontally to fit into a 4:3 image. Has anybody ever seen it in proper 16:9 widescreen? Was it shown that way in the US? Is the DVD the same?
