Not making sense?

I have read through the boards and seen various causes for concern when it comes to plot holes and confusion with this film. However, one thing that tops all of the points discussed is...

The film is set and filmed in Glasgow, Scotland. However, there is not one Scottish person in this film. The Gangsters all have southern 'cockney' accents, same with the women in the shop.

Thoughts?

I guess the London mafia headed north to do some business in Glasgow and ended up thriving/staying there. The woman in the shop? Could have been one of Bart's girls from years ago, now settled into a more respectable working life.

Sadly, accents matter only in the area a movie is supposed to be set. I can't tell the difference between all the "English" accents, be it from the UK or the US. They expect most of the audience not to be much more better than me at it, so they take huge liberties with it. I know that they do it with French as well, and it hurts my ears!

I was kind of confused as to whether or not it actually was filmed in glasgow at times since practically no one was scottish.

If you look at the trivia, Billy Connoly was supposed to play the part that went to Bob Hoskins. Since he is Scottish, the movie was supposed to take place in Glasgow. They had already filmed certain parts and Left the line in.
