What the hell was this?

Was this movie was about a bunch of 20/30-somethings that hate their lives and bitch about it for 90 minutes or what? Actually, I wouldn't know the exact length of this film because I passed out like 45 minutes in. It was trying to be candid and "real" but I don't think anyone's life is that boring.

See, now that's where I think you're wrong. I think many people's lives really are this boring. Which was what made this such a terrible movie. Life really is boring a lot of the time. Movies are an escape from real life, which is what makes them so much fun, for me at least.

I actually saw it at the Sundace Festival in '03 because my dad was Redford's CEO at the time (though in retrospect, I doubt the tickets would have been difficult to acquire otherwise). I hated it, and I told Amy so the next time I saw her. I suppose I was a bit more diplomatic than that, but I told her the truth: that I didn't enjoy it at all.

The problems with the movie abound, but they start with the most basic: none of the characters are likeable. If you have a great story and great acting, you can get by on a cast of unlikeable characters (like Closer, http://www.imdb.com /title/tt0376541/ for example).

On top of that, movies that are supposed to be like real life need something more than just real life to carry them. They need to be funny or have a compelling story that's outside the ordinary, or SOMETHING. This movie had none of that.

If we wanted movies that were just everyday life with no significant events, we'd skip the movies altogether. At least I like the people in my life.
