U.S. backed dictators

before anyone starts on castro, have a think about the following dictators backed by the USA.

FULGENCIO BATISTA
President of Cuba
Under Batista, U.S. interests flourished and little was said
about democracy. With the loyal support of Batista, Mafioso boss Meyer Lansky developed Havana into an international drug port. Freedom of speech was curtailed and subversive teachers, lawyers and public officials were fired from their jobs. Death squads tortured and killed thousands of
"communists".

GENERAL SANI ABACHA
President of Nigeria
General Sani Abacha is a corrupt and repressive dictator in the oil-rich country of Nigeria.

IDI AMIN
General of Uganda
Amin was one of the most notorious of Africa's post-independence dictators..
Amin
brutalized his people with British and US military aid and with Israeli and CIA training of his troops.

COLONEL HUGO BANZER
President of Bolivia

In 1970, in Bolivia, when then-President Juan Jose Torres nationalized Gulf Oil properties and tin mines owned by US interests, and tried to establish friendly relations with Cuba and the Soviet
Union, he was playing with fire. The coup to overthrow Torres, led by US -trained officer and Gulf Oil beneficiary Hugo Banzer, had direct support from Washington.

P.W. BOTHA
President of South Africa
South Africa's
apartheid regime was quietly supported by the US government, despite a UN boycott and Congressional efforts to reduce US investment there, Ronald Reagan significantly increased military expenditures in the country.

VINICIO CEREZO
President of Guatemala
According to Amnesty International, arbitrary arrest, torture, disappearance, and political killings were everyday realities for Guatemalans during decades of US financed military dictatorship.

GENERAL SAMUEL DOE
President of Liberia
Samuel Doe came to power in a bloody 1980 coup, a Master Sergeant in military gear. Today, he is a self-made General in a suit, living on US aid and corporate kickbacks. But while Doe and his cronies live in luxury, the rest of Liberia dwells in squalor.

KING FAHD BIN 'ABDUL-'AZIZ
King of Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is supported by the
United States and other western democracies because of the enormous oil wealth. The irony of American policy in Saudi Arabia is that the US, the world's most vocal advocate for democracy, supports one of the most undemocratic regimes in the world.

GENERAL AUGUSTO PINOCHET
President of Chile
Augusto Pinochet deposed democratically elected President Salvador Allende in 1973, and buried Chile's 150 year old democracy. "Democracy is the breeding ground of communism", says Pinochet. The bloody coup, in which Allende was assassinated, was carefully managed by the CIA and ITT. Tens of thousands of Chileans have been tortured, killed, and exiled since then, according
to Amnesty International.

GENERAL SUHARTO
President of Indonesia
Indonesia is a totalitarian state and its uncontested ruler for over 20 years, General Suharto, is one of the most brutal dictators in history. After a CIA organized coup brought him to power in 1965, Suharto, decided to purge every communist subversive from Indonesian soil. General Nasution, a close associate of Suharto, called for the extermination of three million Indonesian communist party members, and with the CIA supervised the murderous purge. Ultimately, one million people died in one of the most savage massslaughters of modern political history. The US continues to this day to train and arm the Indonesian military with the latest high-tech equipment.

i doubt that a lot of people in the usa even know one name in this list. most don't even know where those countries are... :(

im american, and i don't support this...but what exactly is the point of this thread? Is this some kind of justification for your own support of another dictator?

hypocresy exists within every government in the world, thats like pointing out some sort of "self interest" amongst governments, now duhh every government has it , if governments did not realize their foreign policies based on their own self intereset than that government wouldn't survive....of course the US government is the biggest hypocrate of them all, hahahah thats why we are #1, thats why we have survived, the world is an ugly place with ugly people you cannot play Mother Theresa my friend, but at least show some decency to your own people and your ok in my book..

I can tell you many ugly policies about our own government, like the fact that we supplied Saddam Hussein with the weapons he used to kill the Kurds, did we endorse that? Of course not, but we supplied him with aid because he was fighting a common enemy at the time called Iran....its as if i give you the knife and you kill with it, well thats your fault not mines...

i agree with you 100%.....but my point is that we are criticizing Fidel, and when we are criticizing Fidel you cannot than come with the argument that the US supports or supported other dictators, it is irrelevant....as if somehow justifying Fidel?? Our support for other dicatators at any given time has nothing to do with the fact that Fidel is a ruthless dicator...when we criticize him you might say that we are being hypocrates, but this doesn't disprove our criticism of him...that is why i asked what was the point of this? It would be like counter arguing a criticism of Kim by saying "ohh but you Americans supported Hussein in the 80's"...ok, and?? is this somehow disproving the fact that Kim is a ruthless dictator?..get my point?

and ummm our "empire building" as you put it , is the same as our survival.. our realist foreign policy is for the survival of this country, why do you think we supported and funded islamist extremists during the Soviet Afghan invasion? Because the Soviets were our biggest enemy, and we were at stake of giving up an already anti-American region of the world, if we did't do this and other policies than other countries would take the advantage and we would loose our grip.....are some of the policies "morally" right? Of course not, but as i told you the world is an ugly place...

So you agree he is a dictator, yet you somehow support him..and you dare talk about hypocresy...pffsss hahaha

And what are you talking about?? Not as brutal as Batista??WTF? I want you to prove that...why is he not as brutal as Batista? Or are you just spouting crap out of your mouth because of your blind romanticized admiration of Castro?

Better healthcare than the US and highly developed? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!! wow you surely are spouting crap...yeah sure free healthcare, yet there is not even penicillin or aspirin hahahahaha highly developed yet Cuba has to import sugar even though the whole country is covered by sugarcanes and supposed to one of the biggest producers of sugar....that would be like Saudi Arabia having to import oil..now that is truley PATHETIC!

Mafia bosses who bullyed the world? If USSR was a Mafia Boss how can you support Fidel? I mean your really contradictory, make up your mind...tell that to South Korea, ask them if the USA were a Mafia Boss..

Yes both were trying to survive, 1 of them won, the USA..how did Vietnam, Nicaragua, etc.. etc.. threaten USA's survival? Are you for real? Do i really have to explain this to you? You think the USSR would have liked it if it was surrounded by US allies? Same with the USA, it wanted to keep USSR influence from its neighbors...and in distant places like Vietnam it was just a support of ideology and because they were strategic areas..

"Well if I have to choose between Batista and Castro I prefer Castro. Why people went for revolutin if Batista was so good and nice leader? If these two are the choises I prefer Castro.
We all know that democracy is OK for USA as long the result is right. look Haiti for example."

But why do you prefer Castro over Batista? You still did not give me the facts i asked you for, you said Batista was worse than Castro, and im asking you to show me the facts!?

"See it from Cuba´s point of view. USA has set up trade-embargo and still Cuba survives so well. What if there were no trade embarg? Thats what USA doesnt want to find out as USA still keeps the embargo, even USSR cant be used as excuse"

Have you been to Cuba my friend? Fortunately i have, i have seen with my own 2 eyes the 2 Cubas....there is 1 Cuba where the embargo doesn't exist and there is 1 Cuba where the embargo exists, and the Cuban government does it on purpouse...the 1 where the embargo doesn't exist is where tourists stay, with lavish 5 star hotels with abundant food and medical supplies....the other Cuba is where the Cuban citizens live, in which they have NOTHING!!

So yet again i tell you to stop giving me that crap "embargo" myth...

"And about USA vs Cuba healthcare watch Sicko."

i have no idea what "Sicko" is, but i do know what this is: http://www.therealcuba.com/Page10.htm

"Socialism and USSR are two totally separated things. USSR was totalitarian state, way much more than Cuba. (i know I live in Finland, next to Russia) Its not black and white world u know."

Listen, i know what you are, you are a revolutionary leftist, that is why you support Fidel and Cuba and all of that, even though it is obvious crap, but only because they are against "THE BIG CAPITALIST MURDERER AMERICANS"...I bet you support North Korea and Kim Jong Il too right? Im sure you are an avid admirer of him....don't you understand? Marx said it himself, the time has to be right in order to have a revolution, how can Fidel be so stupid as to have a Marxist revolution in Cuba which is a farmer's country!?? First you need advanced capitalist system!!!! This is Marx 101!! So even if you are a Marxist how can you support FIDEL!?? I don't understand it?

"LOL. The PR campaing worked for you. Nicaragua tried to buy arms from France and GB, but USA prevented it and Chezs sold MiGs from 50s. How is that a threat? Use your head! The point was to block the social-movement which was threatining USA´s intrests in Latin America (er.. its called imperialism). That was the reason why USA overthrew Allende in Chile and tried to do that to Chavez in 2002 too. And thats why USA manipulated elections in Mexico 2006.
You should read Grepg Palast (he is not allowed to report in USA media, he has to do it from BBC. How free your press is? lol)"

are you a ok? you just admited it was "threatining USA's interest in Latin America", THATS THE THREAT!! i was refering to....Do you see anything wrong with imperialism? Because i don't...

Greg Palast is not allowed? No, more like he doesn't get a job at the Conservative runned media, and i don't see anything wrong with it, they are private companies and they show whatever they want, if the public is too stupid to rely on 1 source thats their problem, Greg does all the research he wants in this country....At least Greg can do all the research and talking he wants...can a reporter go to Cuba and do the same Greg does ?? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

so don't give me that "hypocresy" garbage, if you hate hypocresy, than you should kill yourself for supporting Fidel!

The USA can't support democracy & human rights, while supporting ANY dictators. Hipocrisy is the original sin.

Castro had ideals. Batista had greed.

"An estimated 20,000 people were murdered by government forces during the Batista dictatorship."

In my humble opinion; americans have jack sh!t to complain about anyone. You guys were the biggest buddies of Saddam when he fought the Iranians. And dont give me that BS about teh kurds. Saddam was killing the kurds when relations between Saddam-Iraq and the US was at it's best. Americans are ignorant. They complain too much about the world. Look at the mirror, fatsos.
