Something That Stuck Me As Odd

While watching "Camp" this evening, something struck me as odd.

During the scene when Ellen & Vlad are listening to the Boom Box on the roof, Ellen makes a comment about Joni Mitchell, and how she knows every one of her albums by heart.

Later, when Vlad shows Ellen all of the sheet music he found in Bert Hanley's room, he makes a comment that one of the songs has a real "Neil Young" feel to it.

She looks at him with a blank stare, and then he says in disbelief, "You don't know who Neil Young is?". She shrugs her shoulders indicating that 'No, she really doesn't know who he is.'

It's certainly possible that she loves Joni Mitchell and has never heard of Neil Young....

Considering her age, it could make sense. Someone exposed her to Joni Mitchell, and she liked it and became familiar with her music. No one introduced her to the music of Neil Youg, therefore she'd never heard of him.

It just struck me as so odd -

To me, the music of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young have so much in common...

- Both are guitar-playing, singer/songwriters who hit the music scene right at about the same time.
- Both are somewhat political in their songwriting
- Joni Mitchell almost married Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, Nash
- Neil Young joined Crosby, Stills, and Nash (they became "Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young"
- She commonly did live gigs with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.
- David Crosby produced her first album

I may be the only who gave this any thought or thought it was odd ...just felt compelled to post.

I've been listening to Joni Mitchell practically since birth and I only got into Neil Young about halfway through high school.
Although they were friends and collaborated musically, to a young girl, Joni Mitchell's music is much more "pretty" and relatable than Young's so I don't think it's all that odd.

And Joni was involved with Graham Nash. John Nash is the mathematician that "A Beautiful Mind" is based on...

Thanks for the reply.

And thanks for the correction on the Nash thing. You're absolutely right..it's Graham Nash, not John.

Agree. One would think that if you know about Joni, you would know about Neil Young.

Something tells me it reveals something about her character, in that she never bothered to look for similar music by that artist.

Perhaps she wanted to keep it 'special' and untarnished by anything else. Revealing her idealistic but also a little fearful and narrow minded view on things.

Or maybe she purposefully dismissed anything that sounded similar to her favorite artist, once again keep her artist 'special' and untarnished by any other influence.

I have been a fan of Joni Mitchell for ages, but have never listened to Neil Young. I knew who he was before I knew of Mitchell, but I rarely listen to male singers. I just prefer hearing the inflection and tonal differences in a woman's voice.

it would have been funny if Vlad asked "who?" or shrugged when Ellen mentioned she listened to Joni Mitchell.
