who does beethoven belong to now?

i haven't seen 3,4 or 5 yet but i seen the frist two and i was looking at the cast list and wonder
beethoven belong to George,Alice,Ryce,Ted and Emily but in 3-4 Beethoven now belongs to Richard,Beth,Brennan and Sara
did the frist Newton family gave him up?

The first family went to Europe and left him with their cousins. I guess if they ever come back from Europe they get him back or something.

That part I didn't understand. You do realize Universal put that poor dog in retirement so they could put out more family-friendly films, like Babe and Casper for example.
