Tiberius Movie

They have movies on Julius Caesar, Augustus, Claudius and lots on Caligula and Nero but why never a movie exclusively about Tiberius? He's always just a cameo appearance in Augustus and Caligula movies. Only major role he had was in I Claudius but even still that was about Claudius rather than any emperor exclusively. But dissappointing of the first 5 or 6 emperors, the Julian emperors, they never gave Tiberius a single film exclusively to himself. Wish they would, he was just as interesting if not more so. Guess he was less infamous though.

Well there has been a movie about Tiberius exclusively, but as it was Kaiser Tiberius, a German two-reeler released in September 1916, so I'm not surprised that it isn't much remembered these days. If you want an interesting portrayal of Tiberius you have to try and see the old British TV series The Caesars, which was shown about ten years before I, Claudius. Of course, it's a bit like I, Claudius in that it covers the period from the death of Augustus to the death of Caligula, but Tiberius is undoubtedly the most developed character of the piece and Andre Morell portrays him very well indeed.

Thanks I'll have to look into those. Do you know if the Caesars has been released in the US?

I actually really liked Tiberius in I, Claudius. He was one of the only characters that I felt they got true to history. Plus the actor playing him was really good.

Well, I guess it's a case of horses for courses. I've never much rated George Baker in that role.

Dunno about anything else he did but he was fine in that.

I agree the portrayal in I, Claudius was very good, Tiberius seemed like the most complex of the emperors in that one. But still they could do a Tiberius movie about his entire life, not just when he was emperor. He only was emperor 23 years and lived for 78 years. So more than two thirds of his life were left out, although I, Claudius did show his pre-emperor days. Before being emperor he was one of Rome's most important generals. I heard they were making a Hadrian movie but that was a while ago and I haven't heard anything since.

Well he mostly stayed on the island of Capri and left it to Sejanus to rule for him.
