The librarian's attraction to Finbar.

Do you think the librarian was morally a good person or do you think her attraction towards Finbar was one of somewhat revenge for her horrible boyfriend?

reply

I think she was just REEEEAALLY REEEEEAAALLLY horny.

 Sorry. Stupid comment. I just made myself laugh. 

Naw, I think that the Librarian did like Fin. (maybe not as a lover, but as a friend---future friend).
I don't think she used Fin to get back at her boyfriend.

This whole movie is about "friendships", and about people that were somehow all either lonely, shy, introverts, and really needed each other---in one way or another.

At the end, the characters learn something about friendship.

I didn't take it as that. Her attraction to Fin (whether as friend or more one can decide) began back at the library, before the bar incident. Granted it appears her relationship with her boyfriend was deteriorating before the call at the bar, so I can see how one could go that route too.

I think she was lonely. Look at where she works - there is nobody there. She was shocked when she almost ran into Fin and said "i didn't think anyone was here." She was sitting out front all by herself later in the movie too when he and Joe waked by. Fin didn't have any expectations from her and was certainly no threat, not to mention he was certainly different than the other guys in town. Look who she was having a baby with! I would suspect this would make Fin very attractive to a townie.

A little sadly, I think it's just a device for the movie. I enjoy the movie tremendously but I had reservations as to how enthusiastic this woman was to Fin. On the one hand it's nice to see a lovely woman not feeling at all awkward with a male dwarf, but in reality it seemed a little too much. Like she was completely untouched by usual societal perceptions. Works for the movie but it just felt too simple to actually buy into to.
Not really commenting on the revenge angle, just that their friendship blossomed very quickly and I wasn't convinced.

I think she likes Fin, and who knows maybe down the line a relationship might spring up when Emily kicks Chris (her Boyfriend) to the curb. But for now he's just a really good friend to her, something that she probably doesn't have in her life.

My only criticism of this film and it's only a nit pick, is I wish Emily became a part of Fin/Olivia/Joe little gang as she's every bit as lonely and hurt and needs a bit healing like the others. I think she's a sweet soul stuck in a shitty relationship with a guy who just doesn't deserve her. I think Fin is a breath fresh air in her life, he doesn't judge her or treat her like crap and listens to her. Fin's that bit of excitement she probably has never had in her life. Probably the type of guy she'd thought she end up with, a gentle smart guy who isn't a drunken big mouth bully lout.

This is one of few times Michelle Williams plays a really likeable character. I wish she played characters like this.

Yes - she's a morally good person. Just young and naive. Seemed to think Fin was physically attractive (you have a nice chin...). And she liked that he was mellow, kind. The boyfriend was a violent, drunken idiot. So, yeah, I think she liked Fin - the bad experience with her boyfriend probably heightened her feelings. But it didn't have anything to do with revenge.
