Joe sure was annoying.

The character of Joe was really annoying. He can across as loud, pushy, needy and desperate for people to like him. He couldn't get the hint to leave Finn alone or at least give him some space.

reply

The whole point was Finn needed a guy like that because he was so afaird to open up to people because of how they had treated him in the past. He expects no one to want to be his friend so he is stand offish, he needed someone like Joe who wouldn't give up on him easily.

reply

Exactly..I found him to be annoying too but I got what he was trying to do as the film went on.

reply

Kristin, excellent way of putting it.
I agree.

The "outgoing" Joe ended up being a very good friend "type" for Fin, (Fin: who was an introvert type person).
Joe helped Fin to "come out of his shell" (as did that little girl Clea, for example).

While Joe got on my nerves as well, the point of the film was that he, Finn and Olivia were all lonely in different ways and that's how they gravitated to each other. For all Joe's bravado, he is a sad person in need of companionship.

reply

^ Well said and all three characters were indeed lonely. Finn just avoided contact with people because of all the negative experiences he'd had in the past. Once he found some good people he could bond with he was willing to open up.

I didn't mind Joe and I used to work with a guy who was like that. People like that mean usually well: they are just lonely and looking for a friend.

reply

He was the only interesting character in the movie.

So much for tears / so much for these long and wasted years

reply

I like Joe so much. He's like a big kid, but did you notice that he treats Finn like a person from the very beginning? Plus when the guys were being jerks, he asked them to stop, didn't just ignore them. Someone like him can seem like too much, but really, he has a heart of pure gold. He is the Don Quijote to Finn's Sancho Pancho--I don't know if you caught when he calls him that in the film.

reply

^ exactly

reply

You nailed it. Bobby Carnavalle played Joe perfectly.

reply

Agreed Bronte!

reply

How do you not like Joe? Sure he was sort of overly friendly too quickly but he was such a sincere and sweet guy. If he had not been "pushy" Finn would probably never have opened up to making new friends.

reply

He was the best character in the film. Like the poster above me said, he has a heart of gold.

reply

He wasn't desperate for people to like him. He liked people and wanted to hang out with those who he liked the most. Maybe he wasn't that realistic a character. Finn wouldn't have gotten so many chances over and over again, but still as a character I thought he was great.

reply

Joe was the most likable person in the movie. Annoying, sure. But also likable.
