Most Europeans were uncircumcized, and as such Nazis could easily tell Jews from non-Jews, by checking to see if they were circumcised or not.

I confirm. Circumcision for non-religious reasons is still far less common here nowadays than it is in the USA, even if it's more frequent than it was back then.

sharehe was nasty.. great of M Caine to take on such a role so that we get to see a compelling character study every now and then.. just re-watched it on Netflix.. but I recall the DVD extras including a nifty interview with Caine, discussing the character`s total lack of an upside. He made the role compelling and human anyway, even if the guy was a turkey. Thank goodness Caine has taken roles like this, or supporting characters, so that we get to watch a true artist in action. I even liked his (almost) cameo role as DiCaprio's father in Inception.
