A very poor after school special!

Aside from Ryan Reynolds' acting, the movie was poorly written, directed and acted. The story was unbelievable, the characters acted irrationally and contrarily. There was very little in the way of plot and character development and when characters did develop, they did so as if written from formula. The movie was predictable and vapid. David Paymer's characterization of Matthew Warner annoyed me to the point of yelling at the television. What's truly sad is that there was potential in the idea behind the screenplay. Give the subject matter to a better writer and you may have had a worthy film. The whole thing reminded me of an after school special, and a bad one at that. The only character that was remotely believable was the angry math teacher who was obviously jaded by years of dealing with horrible little brat children.

Absolute disagreement about the writing. It's witty and engaging without being too "funny." There are numerous really good lines and the script follows a definite arc. The movie could have been better, but the fact that it wasn't can't be blamed on the writing.
