Please help!

My friend and I are confused about the resolution of this movie. When Louis-Arnault and Paul have the conversation after Louis-Arnault falsely claims that Mecir's brother stabbed him what does he mean by "in your opinion, what would i do if i loved you? What would i do?" what does he mean!? Im assuming this is a vague translation problem becuase i have no idea what to think about their relationship at this point. Someone please explain.

And if someone can explain the meaning of the whole ending!!! I did not understand a thing about the reactions of all the characters.

reply

Louis Arnault means this to be that he doesnt really have a choice. Even if he did love Paul, nothing would come of it. Because he knows his place in society and what he wants to become and loving Paul has nothing to do with it. Its not complete, but the movie ends up with loose ends to make us believe that the lives of these characters goes on after the film.

I think that Louis Arnaud just doesn't have a choice, wether he loves him or not, his place in society won't let him, and he won't let himself love another boy... that's why he said the brother attacked him... to push paul away

reply

i think louis really tot that mecir's bro was the one
louis was very careful not to have any 'physical contact' w paul. if he did, he would be caught and gonna be hard for him to let loose
louis however may have not fall in love w paul tho he knew paul had a crush on him
louis seems to enjoy the affection received from paul. if agnes wasnt in the picture, louis may treat paul a little better

I agree, I absolutely hated Agnes.

I thought that it was Mercir's brother, why would LA lie about that, he seemed so adamant?

Perhaps the real culprit was the 'punk' in suit begging pennies from Emeline
He does look like Mecir's brother

yes, that whole accusation scene struck me as bizarre. however, i do like what some users have said about the interpretation of louis's questions to paul once it became clear that he knew of paul's infatuation. but accusing mecir's brother seems outlandish to me. in fact one of the characters asked if the assailant was the strange guy in a tuxedo, and louis said yes. the beggar and mecir's brother were not the same guy. was louis trying to create a rift between mecir and paul to see whom paul would choose -- mecir or him? i can believe louis is capable of something as despicable as that since he certainly seems to be into mind-games. on a different note, i didn't like that mecir seemed to get the worst of it when in fact he gave the most. he was merely an outlet for paul's sexual frustrations, then cast aside like a used condom when the jig was up. frankly, paul is not deserving of mecir, and i hope the final scene with him on the train smiling and playing with mecir's chain does not suggest a reconciliation between them.

Good observation raymond
What bothered me earlier was, Louis knew about Paul's infatuation and like Agnes said, say something, help this guy and all Louis can say was 'what do you expect me to say/do?'
Although it was a bit harsh of Louis, but I think it was matured of him to handle it that way. A bit selfish, but almost telling Paul, grow-up and find your own answer. In a way, also respecting Paul after all they are both at the same age, young and intelligent

I think it was Agnes who was into mind-games. Louis knew he was just one of the pawns. He played along. Like what Emmeline said, I guess Louis enjoyed the affection he received from Paul. He didn't push him away but made it clear the boundary, as long as he is 'safe' he need not worry about Paul. He may not understood it as love even though he doubted Agnes's intention (but then he did know about his lost underwears)

Once Paul confronted Louis, confessing his feelings and start demanding, Louis knew he needs to back up. It is sad to see how Paul in a way let himself be wrongly manipulated by Louis. He idolised Louis and mistook most of his advices eg. why he should take on sports etc OR simply he was aroused lol

Of course I pitied Mecir and I don't think Paul is seeing him again, not to reconcile. It may be good to see him and apologize, but then Mecir knew who he was in Paul's life. Like Agnes said, all she hears was Louis this and that

Seeing Paul smiling holding Mecir's chain, is like seeing a new Paul, a little matured. Laughing at himself over his own 'stupidity'. Painful but also fun. On a train, he has lots to look forward, many more choices to make

I suspect they didn't have an ending and just stopped filming. "I don't believe any of this!", screams one character.

Neither do we.

I'm not surprised that, after being stabbed, Louis was a bit jumpy and over-reacted when he saw Mecir's brother. There are lots of people in jail for crimes they didn't do (pre DNA testing, but still...)

That was a beautiful observation. Very in depth and well studied.
