The best version

By far this was the best version. I finished reading the novel for GCSE English and our teacher look this DVD from our school to watch it. This was an amazing version and I love how John Hannah played Dr Jekyll.

I caught the last 40 mins or so. And at first I laughed that John Hannah was him. I hate Cold Feet as all fluffy soaps, and so hated him. (How hydeous of me.)
[Edit: I confused him with James Nesbitt. But what coincidence Nesbitt stars in the TV series Jekyll (2007) - talk about dual personality - nominated for a best actor Golden Globe.]
But this script, this version, was a rarity in all film because it had his thought! And I love that. It was so literary, almost poetry - like reading a book but watching a film at the same time. It does wonders for character and story and gives insight into the soul not possible otherwise.

Only Dune (1980's one, not the watery update without thought), and Duel (1971) and The Incredible Shrinking Man (or as I like to call it: The Incredible Thinking Man - or Thrinking) had thought that I can think of. And

And his acting got better and better; it became another rarity - actual acting! I can count on one finger how many things on TV, or even films, make the actor act.

This much better than the 1968 TV one with Jack Palance, and all others too become two-dimensional.

I just finished watching this, and came on here to see what others thought. It's been a while since I read the book but I thought this was a really good film. As the book is very short and there isn't a great amount of material for film makers and actors to use, I thought it was done really well. I especially liked the use of the original characters such as Poole and Utterson.
...
Don't like John Hannah? You mustn't have seen The Mummy.

Christine, what were you thinking?

Does anyone know about a REGION 1 DVD coming out soon? I have been dying to see this version.

reply

I'm not sure if it will because it's a TV movie.

Is it going to be on TV in North America?

reply

I'm from Australia so I'm not sure but since it was made it 2002 it may have already been on TV in North America. It played on Aus TV about a month or two ago.
I also know it's been released on DVD in at least some Spanish speaking countries. (Read that recently).

It was just shown on ITV last night starting at 11pm and despite being knackered and really NEEDING to sleep, the show pulled me in and I stayed up and watched it.

I have not read the book but this is, by far, the best version of the story I have seen, not certain how faithful it is to the original but I didn't have him turn into a physical monster, this way you could draw many parallels to Adult psychosis and drug abuse which can turn even the most intelligent and mild mannered person into a monster.

I am surprised at the amount of Administrative deletions on this page though.

just after watching it on telly there now and by god im glad i stayed up and watched it, its one of the greatest films ive seen in a long while also because the personality traits in this movie or similiar to what i had a few years back so this film reminded me of myself which made it more personal.

an outstanding performance from john hannah who played both good and evil flawlesly.

im very dissappointed that these made for tv movies dont get the recognition they deserve cause there miles better than some of the hollywood crap these days.

anyway im just glad i seen it, i havent watched any other of the jakyll n hyde movies so dont know how dey compare. well i hope i can find it on dvd.

10/10
Worthy of top 250 in my opinion
