That lady who always showed up while Julia was getting massaged...

... Was it just me, or were they (the movie-makers or script writers) trying to imply that she was crushing on Julia? That is to say, was she supposed to be a repressed lesbian character? Because in a few scenes, I got the sense that she was jealous -- jealous of Julia's relationship with the young man. Anyone else get this vibe?

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

I think your instincts are right that she was jealous, but I don't think there was anything sexual about her feelings. She was miss money bags who financed the plays. She fancied herself a patron of the arts and admired Julia and wished, in turn, to be admired. I think, more than anything, she just wanted to be acknowledged as an important part of it all and be seen as Julia's friend. Wonderful performance by both of them. I truly loved this movie.

Dolly is definitely a lesbian, this is mentioned in the official Sony press kit for the film as well as written about quite often in reviews.

Yes, they definitely implied that Dolly was a lesbian. When she sits down as Julia is getting a massage, she immediately gets up and chooses another seat from which she can see up Julia's towel as Julia is getting massaged. There are other clues as well, but that first one is pretty obvious. It's just part of her character that she's a lesbian who is attracted to Julia.

LOL she had the hots for Julia. She was funny and obvious. She was totally jealous of Tom too, lol.

I noticed that she always tried to hold Julia's hands for this extended amount of time. Weird.
