Kaorin is NOT a lesbian!

She is just obsessed! She isn't sexually attracted but "in love" with Sakaki's persona. I don't see why everyone hates her so much. She's cute for crying out loud.

...Unless I am just wrong.

I agree 100% ..... not really but I don't think she's a lesbian, she can admires her to a degree that resembles love and cherishing Sakaki.. (hey who wouldn't?) And Kaorin always brings a laugh, don't know why so many people hate her

"don't know why so many people hate her"

I think its an American thing, I get this big anti-gay vibe from posters in the US, particularly when it comes to animation. If you check out Lelo and stitch board, there are all kinds of Neo-nazi posts about people who think that the film is a secret attempt to subvert American children using hiden sexual messages delivered by green one eyed aliens.

English Language Anime: Dub it, don't pervert it.

If Kaori is a lesbian over Sakaki, then half of the girls in America must also be lesbians over whoever the 'popular' girls in their schools are.

It's just people with filthy mind and conservatives with repressed sexual desires who see lesbians everywhere.

Okay, so maybe she's not a lesbian. But she is annoying. All she ever talks about is Sakaki, Sakaki, Sakaki! It just annoys the crap outta me. But it was funny when she was freaking out about Sakaki wearing the boys uniform.

I thought it was ambiguous... the hints are there I doubt they meen anything but you gotta look and have a laugh on occasion.

but hate? who hates her?
I dont get it... maybe I might if I stick around a bit though...

reply

I dunno, why people would hate her? Because they don't like lesbians or something? In any case, Kaorin is most likely not a lesbian. Until we see her fawning over other girls the evidence points more towards her being enthralled with Sakaki's coolness. That's all she ever talks about after all. It's not the first time in anime where someone is capitvated over someone the same sex as themselves (as displayed with hearts or something) because they're cool. Like in Midori no Hibi when the guys go through the same thing when they see their favorite action movie actor.

reply

I find Kaorin adorable and pitiable, and don't hate her at all. But I think she's probably at least part way to becoming a lesbian. Especially if you go by the English dub. I don't understand the Japanese well enough to notice any innuendos, but ADV has let a few slip in and out. Such as when Osaka said that Sakaki was her new goal, and Kaorin looks all upset and jealous until Osaka explains that she means she wants to be like her.

...and in the last Sports Festival, she imagines she and Sakaki getting married! I'm not saying Kaorin is a full blown lesbian or anything, but I think her attraction to Sakaki specifically, at any rate, is more than just platonic obsession.

reply

So she's Kathy Bates?

reply

I myself sort of fall both ways. Her infatuation is a little disturbing and can sometimes be annoying, but it does make you laugh. She seems a little pathetic though which can depress me.

reply

I thought her schoolgirl-crush on Sakaki-san was perfectly normal.

During the sports fests, when Kaorin gets paired up with sakaki, the screen gets filled up with flowers and jets fly overhead pulling ribbons that are the color of the rainbow. Now, i don't mean to be too presumptuous but the jets pulling the "homosexual colors" make me think that she might indeed be a lesbian. but i'm just guessing.

reply

the color thing, it's not exactly the same in Japan. They're into cute stuff in general (including the guys). At first i thought she might be, but then i just figured it was more of a platonic thing, could happen to anyone. She's by no means one of my favorite characters, but i don't hate her, she just isn't as fun as the other girls.

Um, I don't hater her, but I do think there's a lesbian angle to the story, or at the least, she has some sapphic adulation for Sakaki-san. The rainbow colors in Kaorin's daydream during the dance with Sakaki was a hint and in another episode, she was going crazy over Sakaki's summer photos. And if Kaorin did turn out to be a lesbian, why does it matter? What's wrong with homosexuality, even in Japanese animes? I don't think it's a big deal. I find it more disturbing that there's an outright perverted professor on the show.

reply

Yeah, I agree completely. I do think Kaorin is a lesbian and in love with Sakaki, however I see no reason to hate or even dislike her just for that. Unless you're a narrow-minded gay-hater, I mean.

I do also find it disturbing the bit with the male teacher who lusts after his students. It's always bothered me considerably that this sort of thing is played for laughs in many anime and manga.

Does the rainbow flag have the same connotations in Japan?

Either way I suspect that she is meant to be a lesbian, not that that stops her being a cute character having her have a crush on another girl is less cliché than having her interested in a boy

I think it's more admiration than love. Compare to real shoujou-ai anime, Kaorin's behavior isn't really that strange.

reply

Actually, in Japan it is quite common for a girl's first crush to be someone she admires, whether it be an upper-classman or just someone she looks up to.

I agree too petekrug17 . But I don't think that in Japan they would call her "lesbian". But however you see it she is in love with Sakaki. That's all.
And the teacher is disturbing, sure.

reply

Well maybe it's just making fun of Shoujo-Ai Anime

There was the sum,mer break episode, she got jealouse of a photo of a girl in the same bed as Sakaki.

reply

How do you know? No one will ever know if someone's gay or not unless we are them. (well I guess in this case, if we ask the creater)

But yes, I'm pretty sure she just really admires her.
