This particular genre of anime, once super popular with series like this and Lucky Star, seems to have dried up for the most part, I heard that the anime Nichijou was a pretty big flop in Japan (and I don't think it ever got a US release either), so that was probably what put an end to it.
Now there are still anime about school girls nowadays, but they tend to be less "slice of life" shows and have some other thing going on, like Girls und Panzer, which is about school girls who drive TANKS!
