"It all began with a little white lie."

I didn´t get which lie that started the lying. Did you?

He said his life of lies started with a little white lie 20 years ago.

We don't get to know that exact lie, he mentions it as a part of his last confession.

I think that what he's referring to is the fact that he didn't graduate from the university he said he did (in fact, it is implied that he didn't graduate at all).
