which is the all time best zombie movie?

To me zombie movies are really scary im just asking people what they think the scariest one is?

reply

dawn of the dead (1978) is the greatest, dead alive is one of the best, scariest...hell of the living dead is creepy, but dawn wins.

Dawn of the Dead '78 kicks all other zombie movies in the balls.

reply

how bout fulci's 'zombie'

reply

i know this is 2 years late, but zombie doesnt compare to dawn at all

reply

But besides.. you might want to check out 28 Days Later.

They weren't zombies, they were infected with Rage. A man made virus. Which is why they were continuously referred to as "the infected" throughout the movie. But yes check it out it kicks ass...just not zombie ass.

The thread killer strikes again.

reply

Actually it's still considered a Zombie movie, movie's like Resident Evil, and even Night of the Living Dead movies are about infected human beings...

reply

While I'd still call it a zombie movie, it's different in the sense that they are the living infected, whereas in Night of the Living Dead they are dead infected.

reply

There are no zombies in Army of Darkness, they have and always have been demons. 28 days later isnt a zombie film either because they are infected with rage.

As for your questions regarding the best zombie films, if your looking for serious ones watch George A. Romero's movies, you won't be dissapointed:
Night of the living dead (Original or remake)
Dawn of the dead (Original. Remake passible)
Day of the dead (Underated)

Comedy I would check out:
Return of the living dead
Braindead/Dead Alive

reply

Dawn of the Dead is, by far, the best zombie film of all. Truly scary, horrific, terrifying, comical, great social commentary, excellent special effects, and the greatest horror film score of all time by the great Goblin!!!

Night of the Living Dead would be next.

The spoof Return of the Living Dead is also great fun.

and, I hate to admit it, the remake of Dawn of the Dead is really good. I even signed an online petition to have the filming stopped but I must say, they did a great job. Compared with the crappy so called horror films of today, it is a really good movie.

DAWN OF THE DEAD, the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be! that movie captures that time so perfectly, it is brilliant, but you guys are forgetting DAY OF THE DEAD, which is way too underated, it is really a great film, it can be slow, but I think it pays off in the end.

reply

Best comedy Zombie movie is without a doubt Shaun of the Dead

reply

See. Leodes is the only one here who knows what the hell they're talking about.

"Shaun of the Dead" is the greatest Zombie movie of all time, and was so underrated, it even missed a best film nomination and WIN in last years Academy Awards to some second rate piece of crap called "Million Dollar Baby", which had NO zombies in it whatsoever, which was seriously LAME.

reply

i agree. shaun of the dead rocked and million dollar baby was crap.

reply

Shaun of the dead ISN'T the greatest zombie movie of all time.

Shaun of the Dead is the best COMEDY zombie movie ever, hands down. the main problem it has is when people who haven't seen all zombie movies can't possibly get all the innuendos that make it so fantastic (fulci's restaurant, "we're coming to get you, Barbara," et al). but i think it's genius. (in a comedy-zombie-movie kind of way.)

See this the thing with people praising Georage A. Ramero & his zombie flicks. I have seen both The Night Of The Living Dead & Dawn Of The Dead & they're remakes, & I personally like the remakes a LOT better, because:

1) No stupid charcter, like in the original NOTLD, Barbra was always screaming & too weak to play the lead role. That is why I'd go for the remake, which is what I have because Barbra tends to kick more ass in that 1.

2. Same thing could be said about the DOTD remake to the original.

I like Ramero's "idea's" as he does have some pretty good 1s, but he never fully puts them on screen. To me I just wanted more from him, but never got the chance due to budget. And I am not saying that low budget horrors aren't bad, because they aren't, in fact they're better than most high budget films, but according to Ramero. Though I have to admit that his last movie, Land Of The Dead is a far more better movie that he's ever done, in gore, make-up, special f/x, characters were well played out & you cheered them on, etc.

I don't understand why people like his NOTD & prefer it over most of the other zombie flicks out there?? Sure it didn't need gore to make the movie better, but the characters were flat, the story was going nowhere, & it was just them being stuck in the house was kind of lame & yet kind of scary.

I like my zombie-horror flicks where they have an orgin of how they became to be, traveling from 1 place to another in order to find food & shelter, action but not over the top, rather realism is the key in most of my horror films. Examples would be:

1) Resident Evil (1-3) - Not really realistic, but it had an origin of the infection & the characters & plot seemed pretty good too.
2) 28 Days/Weeks Later - I did find Weeks to be a bit better than Days, mainly because kids were involved in this 1 & they were considered to be somewhat of a saviour for all of humanity type of thing, because they had blood that could not get infected or something like that?? I forget right now as I saw in the theatres when it came out & just bought the DVD today along with Days.
3) Dawn Of The Dead (2004) - Was pretty good & it did have some pretty good gore in it, but where it really showed it's strength was in the characterization & how they communicated with each other in order to survive. It reminded me of Lord Of The Flies (though I haven't read the book, but I am aware of its nature & its story as it has been re-told numerous times such as on the Simpsons).
4) Night Of The Living Dead - Already explained myself there, so there is no point of me repeating myself.
5) Shaun Of The Dead - It is obvios why I chose this, as it is somewhat like DORD, but with a comic twist & instead of being stuck in a mall, our unlikely heroes are stuck in a pub. Just the chemistry between them made it so much more real & you felt for the characters at the time of need, such as when Shaun's mom dies & later turns into a zombie, you actually feel sorry for Shaun & kind of place yourself in his situation & how you would have done it better or not.
6. Land Of The Dead - A different take on the zombie genre, as these zombies can now communicate with 1 another & can opperate machinary or what have you by not making it *too* cheesy.

Those as you guesed it are but some of my favourite zombie flicks, or at least like them alot. Others that I forgot to mention are Dead & Breakfast, The Return Of The Living Dead, Zombie, & any zombie flicks made by Dario Argento or Lucio Fulci.

Thank you:)

It Ain't Stealing If You Take It Fast:)

Seriously? Resident Evil? I hope you go to a zombie convention and get eaten. </shakes head at stupid poster> And you like the remakes of DOTD and NOTLD better than the originals? Special effects and high budgets do NOT make a good movie dude. Did you like the new Star Wars movies more than the old ones? Land of the Dead is a good movie, but it is not even close to his best. It would be his worst, if he hadn't made Diary of the Dead. Next, you like Weeks more than Days? I don't even know how to respond to that. It might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I'm not trying to totally bag on you man. You've clearly seen some zombie movies. I've got respect for anyone who knows who Argento and Fulci are. But jesus man, get your priorities in order.

reply

My priorities are in order. And since it has been almost 3 years since my last post on this thread, I have seen many more zombie flicks, though not as many as I wanted to. I just liked Resident Evil for its sheer thrill, and story (may not be that great, but does the job), and allows me to suspend my disbelief for a period of time, and I walk out happy, and kind of scared. I don't know man. I just love the Resident Evil franchise, be it playing the games, reading the novels, or watching the movies. There's something about them that pulls me in, that I can't escape from. It's one my guilty pleasures, and yes I cannot wait for the forth installment, Resident Evil: Afterlife. In response to you other question on whether I liked the new Star Wars compared to the old ones, the answer would have to be no. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, so shoot me. The only reason that I liked 28 Weeks Later a bit more was maybe because I saw it in the theater, and when the lights went down low for some of the scenes, I got pretty frightened. I just thought that the characters were better handled this time around, as opposed to 28 Days Later, where it's left ambiguous as to what actually happened to them in the end. Actually I take that one back. So was the ending of Weeks. I just loved the brother/sister relationship, and Robert Carlyle played a great villain of a sort. I believe that I already explained myself as to why I prefer the remakes to the originals of NOTLD and DOTD, but you make no point as to why you like the originals better than the remakes. And I LOVE Argento and Fulci!!!!

Fiery the angels fell. Deep thunder rolled around their shores... burning with the fires of Orc.

28 days later IS considered a zombie movie....Resident Evil people were infected w/ the T-Virus.

Night of the Living Dead is way scarier than Dawn of the Dead. Whether it's actually better is debatable (I think it is), but there's not doubt it's way scarier.

28 Days Later

By far the best zombie movie.
Very good atmosphere and setting.

reply

why does everyone like 28 DAYS LATER!!!!!!!!! it was boring and stupid. and it wasn't a zombie movie.

reply

[deleted]

Are you serious? First off, 28 Days later was a decent movie, and that's being pretty nice. Second, it's not even a zombie movie! As mentioned before, those people were just infected with rage; that's why they all started dying after a few weeks and didn't eat the living.

If you thought that was a good 'zombie' flick I suggest you check out a classic like Dawn of the Dead, you might just *beep* your pants =]

reply

Night of the Living Dead is the classic by which every other zombie film must be judged.
The closest modern film is 28 Days Later, followed by Dawn of the Dead.

reply

kongress wat the *beep* are u talking bout 28 days later is not a zombie movie. Are you stupid, it was only people who were infected with a virus called rage. They didnt even bite people, they threw up all over them. No ZOMBIES!!!

reply

Its seems to me alot of people are unsure of the definition of a zombie movie, maybe these people are not the zombie fans there thought they were!

reply

Zombie is a term synonymous with voodoo beliefs. The real definition is a corpse that has been resurrected by a witch doctor for the sole purpose of the zombie becoming the witch doctors slave. In fact in voodoo beliefs they don't go around eating people, this is entirely a western perception.

reply

actually Skatedream88 the man who helped rescue Jim was bitten.

reply

For me it's got to be Dawn of the Dead 78!,also one of the best horror movies of all time!

reply

The Original Night Of The Living Dead and Dawn Of the Dead take the cake. Romero Made Zombies what they are today. However If you wanna go the comedy Road Shaun Of The Dead is f'n Awesome as Well as Braindead/Dead Alive.
