What other hustler movies?

In reviews, I keep hearing people say that this niche genre is overdone. Other then My Own Private Idaho, what movies are you guys talking about? I can't think of another movie about male prostitution. One review said that the person's friends didn't want to watch it because they were "sick of hustler movies". Could someone please name some?

reply

I'm not big on the hustler movie genre, but I really enjoyed this one. I hated My Own Private Idaho. It was awful! As was Van Sant's other movie (also with Keanu in it) Even Cowgirls Get The Blues.

Some other hustler movies:

SUGAR
SPEEDWAY JUNKY
THE TOILERS AND THE WAYFARERS
RIVER MADE TO DROWN IN
MR. SMITH GETS A HUSTLER
HUSTLER WHITE
JOHNS
THE ESCORT
101 RENT BOYS
SMOKERS ONLY
FROM THE EDGE OF THE CITY
NOT ANGELS BUT ANGELS
SKIN AND BONE
CARESSES
OUR LADY OF THE ASSASSINS
MANDRAGORA
THE VELOCITY OF GARY

If I can think of any others I'll let you know...

Thanks! Yeah, I watched Gus Van Sant's Elephant, I'm not just saying this, it really is THE WORST MOVIE IV'E EVER SEEN. Seriously, it cannot even be compared to a normal movie, just trust me, I've stuck to that since I saw it, and I've seen some pretty bad movies.

I saw Sugar at blockbusters the other day, it looked interesting, was it good? And of the other movies you listed are there any you perticularly recomend?

I am most interested in the desperation, psychology, and hopelessness, I'm not looking for movies about homosexuality in perticular, it's more about the lifestyle - drugs and prostitution. Do any of those fit the bill?

reply

I've only seen SUGAR, CARESSES, and JOHNS. I didn't like CARESSES or JOHNS, but SUGAR was solid and is your best bet. I think it's probably what you're looking for. As you can see, the hustler genre doesn't interest me too much, so I haven't seen a lot of the movies.

I didn't love ELEPHANT or hate it. I thought it was alright. The shower scene was hot though and should have been longer and more graphic ;). I thought Van Sant's IDAHO and COWGIRLS were MUCH worse.

I rented SUGAR, I HATED it. No offense, but I thought it was all dirt and no depth. I didn't care about the charecters, their reactions and situations were unrealistic, and it had NO POINT. SUGAR and TWIST are so similar in subject matter but such different films. I really like the method used in TWIST of staing focused on the face of the charecter durring sex scenes, it's more desturbing to see their expressions and imagine what's happening.

Also, I found the scene where the guys are eating cereal as they jack off to be hygenicaly disturbing. I just can't relate to charecters that would do that.

reply

Well, I couldn't really relate to the characters that much period. I was really mad at the main character for turning down the incredibly cute, nice gay guy that asked him to the prom. What a freakin' moron. And then he went with the kind of ugly guy into the bathroom in the end. I had no sympathy for him for turning down what would likely be a healthy relationship with the cute kid from school. Many of us only dreamed that would have happened to us (gotten asked to the prom by a cute guy from school).

No, it made perfect sense. He was dirty. Maybe it's not universal, but I know I've felt the same way he did: once you've gone there (even if he wasn't Really tricking, he was part of it) touching someone clean just makes it feel even worse.

reply

Unhygenic? Please! They were just horny! Jeeze! Hygenics be damned! "I just need to come!" They were nervy after a night of excssive partying and needed some release.

I'm probably the only person on the board who feels this way, but I actually really kind of liked Johns.

reply

I saw Johns when it first came out in 1996 and then went on a search to buy and own the movie. It's only recently that I came across a copy to own. I really liked it. Don't know why but I did. Probably, like you, because it has Lukas Haas in it.

reply

I'll join ou in liking Johns. I've seen it seversl times but I still find it enjoyable. The director's commentary was a hoot.

Even Cowgirls Get the Blues isn't by the more famous Gus Van Sant, but by his father, Gus Van Sant Sr.

The BEST hustler movie there is (that I've seen) is called FLESH and was directed by Paul Morrissey. It captures the idle lifestyle and the exploitation of this life beautifully. And Joe Dallesandro is beautiful as the aimless hustler, turning tricks all day to pay for his wife's girlfriend's abortion.

A lot of people in this thread are hating on My Own Private Idaho. But I thought it was a great movie. As for Flesh,I didn't like it. It was awfully acted, directed, written, etc. But if you liked it,then good for you.

Maybe L.I.E. and Bully. However, in these two movies, the hustling is not the main focus of the film.

"Mysterious Skin", by Gregg Araki, is incredible. Hustling isn't the main focus of the film, but it's definitely in there.

reply

Yeah, Mysterious Skin and L.I.E. are definitely the best of the genre.

One of my all time favorite films. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was perfect for that role ( and he's so goddamned gorgeous ). Really good film, I highly recommend Mysterious Skin to anyone who hasn't seen it.

I also recommend Save Me. It's a good movie about 2 men who fall in love in an unlikely place to say the least.

The Living End also touched on that (and is one of my fave movies of all time)
And 'What Alice found' (don't remember it much).
And (with Isabella Rosellini, NOT the 'tranny' version!) Filthy Gorgeous.
Oh, and La Virgen de los Sicarios.

Circuit is another decent one

Umm, what about "Flesh" and "My hustler" by Andy Warhol?

Not really conventional movies, but they focus on hustlers ._.

reply

Well, kids, you seem to have seen them all - from "Midnight Cowboy" - type films to "L.I.E." to "Twist" to "Sugar" to one I just saw, "Pretty Boy" (Danish).

I'm gay; not a hustler, but an actor. I've been around and can say with certitude that I related most closely to the "reality factor" in our own home-grown gritty film, "Sugar". I've seen that world first hand but, by-and-large, been a non-participant in it.

"Sugar" comes just about as close to what I've witnessed on the street and in the home as you see in the film. It's just slighltly over-done obviously for dramatic effect, but just by a hair's breath. Butch's final scene is reality and finality.

When one goes into one's own bathroom and finds little splatters of blood on the sink 'cause the kid's just shot up some coke and is looking out the window to see if someone is there looking for him and is after him and then he wants to get fist f...ed 'cause he's so wired, well.

Then, you go out and see this whole sub-culture of young guys there who are in the same boat - hustling, shooting up, looking for the the next John for the next fix, it's pathetic. But it is there. I'm not lying about this. I've seen it.

As for puttig a spin on this bro-to-bro thing, man, who know's if they weren't step-brothers? (I haven't seen the film since it came out a while ago). And when you're wired on coke or whatevever, anything goes; and I ain't talking Cole Porter! Cheers!

Where the day takes you and American Heart are good. They are Indies and not all glossy. The main focus isnt gay huslting, but its touche don alittle. Its more of the on the streets genre and doing what you have to do to get by. There was also one called Wonderland back in the 90s that was pretty good.

Midnight Cowboy is my fave.
