Re:Gay Scenes

the film is quite intense and Emile Hirsch gives an absolutely astounding performance. there are 2 "gay scenes". in one Perry played by Tom Guiry rapes
Duncan the character played by Hirsch. the scene is so in your face i'm surprised the film recieved an R rather than an NC-17 rating. also there's a
subsequent scene where Hirsch and Guiry are kissing in the cab of a pickup truck.

Wow, sounds pretty harsh....how does it work out? does Duncan know he was raped by Perry? why does he kiss him later?

reply

the scene's between boys are very complex. especially duncan's character. there are probably a million different ways to interpret the rape scene. some might suggest that on some level duncan wanted to have sex with perry, which due to what has happened in his life can be explained as a phycological responce to his mothers death.

but with alot of the people that i talked to, they suggest, and i agree, that duncan did have some not so repressed feelings for perry, which is revealed later in the car scene. though duncan proves himself to be rediculously naive, it would be hard to say whether or not he had any concept of gay sex, or sex in any form... and like most people i think, after his first sexual experience with perry, duncan becomes even more attached to him, ie. the kiss.

btw, emile hirsch does an amazing job in the role. expecially with the sex scenes. it takes guys to play that role, and he plays if very very well.

Duncan goes over to Perry's at night and gets him outa bed.....they sneak out and sit in an old truck at Perry's farm. They talk, Perry gets mad, grabs Duncan and kisses him roughly/rudely. Then Duncan gives him a breathtakingly tender kiss, which Perry of course enjoys, realizes what he's done and calls Duncan a 'fag' and then leaves the truck angry/confused about himself....goes back into the house and is beaten up by his dad....next scene you see Perry's face all bruised.

I think it's the way Hirsh gave the kiss which started the rumor mill that he was gay. I don't think he is, but a great young actor.

it's unfair that an actor would be considered gay just because they play a homosexual role in a movie *sigh* i'm just glad there are great actors like Emile that are willing to take great roles like these because he did such an amazing job at it. I think it's clear throughout the movie that Duncan had a little crush on Perry and I think that many signs pointed to Perry having a crush on him too... he just couldn't accept it the way that Duncan could. I agree with you all that Emile did an amazing job in this movie. I can't get over the fact that Perry is Smalls from The Sandlot though, lol

Holy crap, is that true??? Wow, obviously, someone kicked sand in his face at the beach...

But to your point, yes, I'm glad that there's a new wave of young actors willing to portray queers....but, there are legions of GAY young actors willing to play gay roles and be real role models.

I used to have a list of MUST SEE movies for boys. Let's see if I remember some of them...sorry for any misspelled words (no particular order):

Sandlot
Goonies
A Christmas Story
Ollie Hoopnoodles Haven of Bliss
Good Ol' Boys
Stand By Me
Ernest Saves Christmas (not too crazy about the rest, this was his magnum opus)
The Witches
Dragonslayer
Dragonheart
Mighty Ducks
Black Stallion

Ummm....probably should stop there, because that's all safe for the little guys AND bigger dudes. I grew up in the rural Midwest, so I gravitate towards stories that involve boys everywhere dealing with the summer heat and boredom, always with the prospect of adventure afoot.;-) To me, these are all classic fare, not to be polluted by the Disney, tear-jerker, money grubbing, animated genre', which no doubt please many.

The rape scene was disturbing, but it wasn't graphic at all. And if you think an extremely ungraphic rape scene and guys kissing is worth NC-17, then your in for a rude awakening.

If anything were to make this movie NC-17 it would be the graphic sexual dialouge, but even that was milder than other undisputed R movies.

reply

I'll second that one. Some people are more threatened by the fact that it's 'gay' (or 'homoerotic' as i believe that's what the original poster called it) than watching someone's face as they get raped.

HOMOEROTIC KISSING?!?! OMG!!!11one
NC17, no one wants to see that!

reply

There's also a scene where Tom's tinkle gets sucked
