Could have been great

A great idea, good acting, funny script, poignant characters. But sadly, all over the place.

They really dropped the ball on the pacing of his redemption. His personality is a douche who starts to get better, then reverts back to a douche. He starts getting better again, then reverts back to a douche. He starts getting better yet again, and again for no discernible reason he reverts back to a douche.

It should have been a gradual redemption, otherwise why would we care whether he wins, loses or draws? The whole point of 'feel good' redemption movies is for the viewer to immerse themselves in the character and empathize with him. That way, they care about him and then feel good when he comes around.

When it goes douche - good - douche - good - douche - good etc. it doesn't matter how the movie ends because you don't really believe it's the end. Even though the last thing is good, you are still going to suspect him to go douche again.

Yeah, I felt the same way. And they shouldn't have made him so much of a douche at the start because then it's tough to ever feel like rooting for him. It also wasn't believable for him to be schooling the T-Rex kid on being a teammate (as if he'd learned his lesson) when he was doing the same things. Even at the end, when he made the sacrifice bunt, he acted like a douche, angry that he didn't get the hit while his teammates celebrated.

I didn't see him going from douche to good multiple times.

I saw him begin as a douche.

Only become good because he realized he wasn't as good as he thought. Then he learned what it was like to be a team player.

Then he turned into a douche in the end when the owner made him go on a publicity tour...

And he realized he was reverting back to his old ways, and changed for good.

So for me, it was a story about redemption, with one stumbling block. As a baseball lover, I really thought this movie hit the mark...especially with the ballet music warm up.
