Why did this film not have sequels?

Since his message board seems to have been purged:

This film was based on the first 3 books of many. Watching it, it seems to have been set up for continued sequels. Why didn't those happen?

I see that it didn't make a lot of money and it's not rated super high, but I wonder if there weren't other forces at work, such as those that plagued The Golden Compass. It's a shame -- I thought it was done very well.

Didn't many people go to cinema to watch it?

It did. Despicable Me...

I believe in this case it was their intent to go ahead with a sequel, but then Paramount encountered some kind of financial problem? And that by the time a new team was brought in to handle the company, it was years after the first had come out and interest was lower, as well as the kids having aged too much being a problem. I know there were talks about possibly doing a stop motion sequel but I'm glad that fell through. I can't wait till the Netflix series is out.

I was 9 or 10 when this came out and I loved the books. I remember being so ticked off that there were 3 books condensed into one movie. I had thought we were getting one movie per each book, like Harry Potter. LOL I was still really disappointed when no sequel came out tho!

No way would they have been able to take a movie per book because there are thirteen books and Emily Browning and Liam Aiken were older than their characters as it was. I'm still glad they cast those two even though they should have casted someone younger, I can't complain because Emily and Liam made the movie for me. It would have worked out fine it only the writers and everyone had it situated before they dove into it. The movies/sequels should have came out like the Twilight movies-just shooting them out one after the other. That would have been the only way that it was going to work and yet they dragged their feet for whatever reason on the sequel for years. By the time they got everything situated, Emily and Liam were too old to make more movies for it.

Also I believe Emily took so many years off of acting but I may be thinking of another actress....

Right, not pompous at all then.

I wish they would've have done sequels, I know Netflix is doing a television series.
But I think the film ended like it wasn't supposed to have a sequel, they only intended to do the first three sadly.

Jim Carrey doesn't do sequels. After doing Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, he stated that the experience was so bad that he decided to never do any sequels for any of his work.

It's why we got that awful Son of Mask film, it's why we got Even Almighty instead of Bruce Almighty 2, it's why we got Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd and Ace Ventura Jr.

It's a miracle he came back for Dumb and Dumber To

I don't doubt what you say about Jim Carrey in general.

But I would be very surprised if he wasn't hard-contracted into sequels to this, were it to have been successful enough to do.

The film was actually a hit in theaters it wasnt a mega hit but it was a hit an they wanted a sequel as a matter of fact its like the second highest grossing nickelodon produced film i think.I believe the only reason we diddnt get a sequel as i read was because the studio was having finance problems an by the time it was worked out the kids were to old

Eh, $200 million was a good box office return, and that's not counting DVD and Merchandise sales. I think it was overbudgeted, though, which didn't help. The real reason it didn't get a sequel, according to Handler, was because of internal issues at Paramount, which delayed a continuation. 12 years later, Netflix bought it.
