Better than the Netflix Series

I revisted this 2004 adaptation with Jim Carrey after I saw the new Netflix series. Overall, I liked the series but I was not of a fan of the production design and most of the acting. I remember watching the movie with Jim Carrey and liking it back then.

After rewatching it, I have to say this is superior to the series IMO. I have not read the books, but the performance by Jim Carrey is by far better than Neil Patrick Harris. The cinematography and set design are also a lot better than the series. I had a couple of pacing issues with the Netflix adaptation, but it was not the case with the 2004 film.

I hope the series will push more people to revisit this good movie!

The pacing thing is surprising considering the movie puts 3 books into less than 2 hours.

Overall I'd rank them books > show > movie. The show, since it's written by the same guy who did the books, is more faithful and all the plot changes it makes are enhancements. I think the narration is done better in the series with Snicket appearing in the scenes, but Law had a better voice for it. I thought Carry made a bad Olaf and was poorly directed, but that's probably me holding him to the book version because those were my favorite books growing up.
The mixture of Wes Anderson and Tim Burton-esque directing in the series is much better imo, exactly how I pictured the books

I agree with you. The series is nice but the movie is better. The movie captured the tone of the series very well.
