The audience laughed and clapped and cheered

Forget the comparison with other films. When an English audience watching subtitles can laugh so much during a film and give a standing ovation at the end - it can't be all bad. I have never seen that before. It was brilliant comedy that stands on its own.

You may put it down to english sense of humour. If you have seen John Cleese in Fawlty Towers, you will recognise that being acutely embarrassed for a character is intensely funny. For whatever reason it brings tears of laughter.

The only problem is being able to see it again. It won't be on general release and I still haven't found a DVD with subtitles to show my friends. And yes, I fear that any remake would lose the lyrical swedish voices - part of the comedy may be that us Brits do not expect Swedes to be so funny.

Yay for Sweden :) I love it when other countries accept our often not so great movies, due to low budget. Keep it up ;)

If you want to show the DVD to your friends, you have to import it from Scandinavia - the scandinavian DVD comes with english subtitles.

Hello imdb-5015,

it is not as difficult to find the DVD as you may think. Amazon.de sells the DVD at an exceptionally low price of 5,97 € (July 13, 2006). Only thing I don't know is whether that specific DVD has English subtitles... Otherwise, I know a well accomplished exporter of original Swedish DVD's: www.mittereauer.de. You can post an individual demand and get any DVD for around 20 € each!

Best regards,
Julian.

The same happened in my local cinema. The audience clapped and cheered at the end. How many other films get such an accolade?

Just found the DVD at DaaVeeDee.com. Arrived on time UK ready, great film that will entertain everybody over Xmas.
