Yep, they are. I was nearly crying during this film as the cuda was getting in worse and worse shape. Can't remmeber if it had a pistol grip shifter?

It did.

I noticed how the Barracuda had a body much like the Mustang Fastback.

You should definitely skip Phantasm.

Phantasm was what made me get really into the Barracuda. I had been an american car fan from when I was a kid but it was corvettes and chargers then. I started to buy American classic in the early 90s when I had a spare bit of money and had seen the Barracuda in them but did not appreciate until I seen Phantasm which wasn't until 96 (I know, the film was ancient by then) and I did wince when I seen the Hemi getting destroyed in that series of films. Apparently the film Christine generated a lot of anger as they destroyed alot of Plymouth Furys

The Plymouth Barracuda was and still is a classic. It was Chrysler's attempt to put a race car on the street. The Hemi-Cuda was an awesome machine. Unfortunately, I seriously doubt that the car in the film had a Hemi engine. More than likely it was either a 383 or a 440. The sound of a hemi engine is unmistakable.

Yes, it had the Hurst pistol grip shifter, (real wood hand grip). When the traffic cop was talking to the mechanic, he was mostly correct in the things that Plymouth did to their "street racer"... Acid dipping for weight, removal of the sound-deadening material. I can't remember but the "street racer" version may have even had plexi-glass windows. To save additional weight, the window regulators and handles were also removed and you manually slid the windows up and down. The street race versions are indeed rare birds.

Now if only the film had been anywhere near as good as the car... :(
