Cold in Viking Lands?

That reviewer doesn't know what he is talking about. I went swimming in the Baltic north of Stockholm this past summer, and it was surprisingly warmer than the Pacific off of the coast of San Francisco. Even so, people who live in colder climes are used to colder weather... and water.

Yes. People seem to forget that Northern Europe does have seasons. They seem to think it is Sub-Arctic (only the far north of Scandinavia is Sub-Artcic...and 'Vikings' did not live there...the Saami people (or Lapps) did).
I live in Northern Europe (Northern England) and I would say Southern Sweden and Denmark have better summers than where I live...and Norway (where the majority of 'Vikings' lived) has the 'Gulf Stream' (like Cornwall) warming the west coast.

I think that as long as there aren't any icebergs, pretty much any sea will be warmer than the Pacific off of San Francisco.
