What if...

What if this movie was never intended to have a message? What if the screenwriter and filmmakers said "Let's make a mindless atmospheric thriller about a crazy bitch who waaaaayyy overreacts to her husband's admitted shortcomings as a husband"? And then did that. I am sure the film's critical reception would elicit a response from the filmmakers that would probably sound like "Hey...hold on...wait a second...that is NOT what I was going for at all."

I don't know if there have been interviews with anyone that debunk that possibility. But it makes the movie about a thousand times better when watching it like that.

For the record, I think the odds of this are slim. But it did cross my mind, and as I said, it made the movie better.

I think it was likely intended to spark debate. But I also strongly suspect (and reactions here bear this out) that the "side" of the debate that sees Steve as (overwhelmingly) the bigger victim, would be a very huge majority of viewers, both male and female--i.e. there'd be little real "debate" going on about it.

The best light I could imagine putting this in, is that this could be a cautionary tale about taking anything for granted in a marriage. I.e. if you don't listen to or regard the feelings of your wife (or spouse), she (or they) might take it for awhile, but then "snap" and do something crueller than anything you could imagine or foresee--not that that would be just or right or "fitting" to the transgression, just that it could happen.

and if your husband(or wife) is doing something, sexually or otherwise, that you don't care for, *beep* SAY SO!
