Hell; literal or metaphorical

I assume the constant references to hell in both the films proper and even the title are intended to be metaphorical, but apparently there are a significant number of people who think that no, they're literally in hell. I personally don't ascribe to that theory because I feel like it kind of misses the whole point and seems like a bit of a bizarre out-of-left-field twist. Any thoughts?
