Why did Sam incriminate himself in the recording?

Basically I didn't understand in the movie, why Sam recorded his conversations with Chen. Sam would be incriminating himself by doing that, so why do it, since it creates evidence, should the police find it?

It made sense in The Departed cause Costello was a protected informant, so he was immune to being charged, but since Sam was not an informant, what was his reason here?
