Is Stu Ungar really worth having a film made about him?

First and foremost, before everyone starts attacking me, I myself am a fan of Stu Ungar. I am a poker player and although I did not know who he was until well after his death, I have researched him to a great detail and greatly admire his talent for playing cards.

With that being said, I was doing some thinking about his life. Stu Ungar, in his entire existence, appears to have never really contributed to society. (But I suppose that statement could be said of any professional poker player.) Stu Ungar made a substantial amount of money by playing cards, by using his god given talent, and instead of putting the money he won to good use and making a life for himself, he blew it on drugs, women, and gambling.

I could have respected him if when he came back and won the 1997 WSOP Main Event, which was an amazing second chance opportunity to redeem himself, if he had used that opportunity to get his life back on track, get off drugs, get his affairs in order, and make an effort to be a father to his daughter, who he claimed he won the championship for, But if that had happened, I would not be writing this right now, because there wouldn't be a movie about him. Sad as it may seem, people like a tragic story more than they like a story of someone rising above their addictions.

Stu Ungar was a man with an enormous talent. Despite the successes he did have, I feel that talent was wasted. He died at the age of 45. Imagine what he could have done with the other half of his life. Imagine what he could have done had he stayed off drugs.

I guess I really can't fault Stuey for behaving the way he did. He lost both his father and his mother at an early age. Which I can imagine had a traumatic effect on him.

And I guess having a movie made about him does have it's benefits. It can teach people the right way to use their talents. To use them for the better, to make a good life for themselves. And to help other people.

He does deserve a movie, but not this one. Rock stars and politicians, many of both who did worse, get movies. Also he was very big in poker world. This movie sucked, was nothing like him, his life, or characters around him. Imperioli was terribly miscast.

A lot less interesting people have had biopics. His story is fascinating just poorly told here.
