I don't get it. What was going on when he had to hit the ball out of the water trap and pulled out a tee.

In the book it says he was allowed to use tees on every shot, so he had one made for every occasion. The tall one would be good in a foot of water. In the movie they say he hit it 3 ft from the hole, but in real life he just got soaked and hacked up the hole.
