which leading man were you routing for?

Hi All -
I'm just writing this to ask everyone who they were routing for Mirabelle to end up with. Despite Jeremey being a really quarky, enjoyable character who for every reason would be the better choice for Mirabelle, I still was routing for the relationship between her and Ray to prevale in the end. So I'm curious is it only me (who has a thing for older men) that wanted Ray & Mirabelle to be together, or if there were others.

give me your tots

Though I may be biased, as I can identify more with Ray, I was rooting for him, because it seemed like he had learnt from his mistake, and he said he really did love her. Jeremy definitely improved by the end, but he didn't seem to have much to offer intellectually, and that's fine if all she wanted was a sort of puppy-dog that would love her, but I'm not sure he could really alleviate her loneliness.

Jeremy was still a loser in the end, he was just a better dressed loser who was a band groupie for 2 months. He was still the guy who would be begging for money.

Except he wasn't. He had a new car and didn't ask her to pay for him when they watched a movie.
He may have been a "loser" in your eyes, but I don't think he looked at himself that way by the end.
He had a lot more confidence in himself and seemed happier with himself. But I can see that you're probably one of those people that only counts success by the amount of money someone has.

I like Jeremy! He is so sweet and nice to her! I am glad that Marybelle and Jeremy ended up together! Ray would have never treated her the same way Jeremy treats Marybelle. I am glad the way it ended. Marybelle is happy and so is Jeremy but Ray will get on with life but never really be happy again. But Marybelle is with a good man who treats her right and loves her. He now has more money and has a job as well.

Hi RMSparkleChick,
You are not alone. I read the book before I saw the movie, so I knew Mirabelle would not be ending up with Ray. He just didn't want to give her the commitment. By the time he told her he loved her it was too late, she was with someone else. I wanted so much for them to be together as well. It would be nice to see in a film one day a May-December romance that actually works out, but none that I can think of comes to my mind. I thought Steve Martin was great as Ray. Very sexy, confident, stylish, and cool. :-)

I liked Ray but it was inevitable that he lose the girl and like so many other things in his sad rich life watch her become a lesson for him to look back on.. this movie strikes one as a bit autobiographical, if not from Martin's direct experience written as a testament to a lost past by a guy who knows what it's like to be able to buy everything except the past. We've all got a story like Ray's, sometimes it's secret and sometimes it hides for a long time but it's there in the recesses of your personal history. There was no way Ray was getting the girl, it's not a love story (from his POV) it's a lost story, and creepy as people think he is he conveys that loss very well at the end..

I was hoping that Ray would want to be w/her so their relationship could evolve out of what it was and into something more rounded .

reply

Well I was disappointed that Ray was such a jerk. He knew Mirabelle loved him but he was afraid to admit he loved her. His saying he loved her at the end was an empty word, more remorse at losing her than real love for her. He hurt her after all by using her even after he realized she loved him. Hollywood will not allow a May-December romance to work. I can think of only one movie that comes close: Murphy's Romance but James Garner is 60 and Sally Field in her 40's not quite may-December but maybe July-December.

From the start I was hoping Jeremy would get his act together. A wealthy older man isn't always the best emotional fit. Jeremy, tho quirky, was more real and he had nowhere to go but up. Ray was boring. Mirabelle was nice girl, she deserved a nice guy.

I liked the Jeremy character. It was nice how he cleaned up at the end, and listened to all those audio cassettes about relationships and connections it only improved him.

The Ray character had it all it seemed, but he was a cold hearted jerk, who bought Mirabelle. Some women accept that in a relationship, but Mirabelle wanted better for herself, she was no fool, she just got caught up in the moment and attention that Ray gave her but even she knew at the end it wasn't worth it without geniuine feelings.

Jeremy might have been weird, but his heart was true, and he did care about her in his own weird way. And he understood Mirabelles artistic side.

I felt a little sympathetic for Ray. He seemed like a sad lonely man. But I'm glad she chose the other guy. I liked that the movie ended on a bittersweet note.

At the begining of the movie it's obvious Ray is the winner cause he's mature and willing to offer Mirrabelle all that she's always dreamed off. He's a grown man with no rush in life that drinks wine and eats sushi, while Jeremy wonders how it would be if he jumped off of Mirabell's balcony to the first floor and eats McDonalds with chopsticks after scratching his head with them.

At the end to me it seemed great as I saw Jeremy maturing throughtout the entire film... I know in my heart that Jeremy would eventually stop scratching his head with the chopsticks he eats... Ray well, he's just old and probably is more aware of the germs and bacteria that grow in his scalp.

Ray Porter became quite a deception to me. Jeremy was the right guy.

reply

I was rooting for Jeremy because at least he was honest and not a total dick.

reply

When I found out that Ray was only looking for sex, that was it, I was going for Jeremy. He was real and honest...a bit awkward in the beginning but he wasn't a sleeze like Ray. I'm so happy Jeremy got the girl, I loved it when he sayed, "I'll protect you" or "I'll keep you safe." can't remember exactly what it was but it was PERFECT! Ray Porter is my ex-boyfriend, buying me things and being a cold dick, only to tell you at the end when you move on, "I love you". those bastards. Jeremy for sure!

I agree with the original poster. For some reason I wanted her to end up with Ray even after he cheated on her. I don't know, I guess I knew the whole time that he really did love her but he didn't want to. At the end when he told her "I really did love you." Was a really emotional scene. This is my favorite Romantic/comedy ever made.

I disagree. I dont know why I never wanted her to be with Ray, he seemed like so cold with her. Even though Jeremy was an a*s they always had a good chemistry. Although I do agree with you that the scene where Ray tells mirabelle that he really did love her, is one of the most emotional scenes I've seen in a movie, he reaction was soo candid and so honest, definately that was my favorite scene.

Overall great film, (something I didn't expect to say).

I don't know how you can say Ray was so cold with Mirabelle...it was obvious to me that despite what he was trying to tell himself about not wanting to be 'exclusive' that he *did* love her...look at the way he took care of her when she went off her anti-depressants, and how he still wanted to be with her even when she said she wasn't ready to sleep with him, and how he was honest about cheating on her and that he had the balls to stay with her while she read his letter - the fact that she let him comfort/hold her afterwards was very telling, and I don't understand how they could have both been so deluded about his feelings for her.

Jeremy, on the other hand, was a putz. Who got forced into "reading audio books" (duh). He and Lisa deserved each other.

I also agree with the original poster. I wanted Ray to be the guy she was with. This movie was sooooo great in my opinion. Maybe it is because I could totally identify with this movie. I am a 30 year old woman in a relationship with a 48 year old man. Ray was trying to be upfront with Mirabelle and that was nice, but I find "Up-front honesty" a little bit harsh. LOL. I cried when Ray finally told her at the end "I did love you". I still hoped that they would get together. Oh well.

GREAT MOVIE!!!
