Those little crap apartments you have, holding down some meaningless job, wandering out into the night hoping for some connection. Martin really captures that like I haven't seen in film before.

And in some ways it was worse for Mirabelle in that she didn't have a stereotypical big family to go home to and hang out with.. her time with them seemed cold as well.. its a double edged sword at that age.. It is exciting to be on your own, to have new experiences but it can also be very lonely for a young single person
