I am working my way through the book just to see how it ends, but it is so boring. Is the movie better or is it boring too? I remember wanting to see the movie when it came out, but now, I'm not so sure.

It's wonderfully boring. Subtly beautiful but a tad slow. I love it.
shareI hate to sound snobby, but I thought the book was much better than the movie. That was why I wanted to see the movie in the first place.
Although I love Claire Danes in Homeland, I thought she was awful in this. And Jason Schwartzman wasn't very good either.
The book was better than the movie but not by much. The book had a melancholy and mystery that permeated the mundane life of the shopgirl and a menacing mystery for Steve Martins character. Many elements were lacking in the film but not worth the time to explore. Besides being too long, it was much too sacharine and cliche. Claire Danes was wrong for the part too so that didn't help.
