The bell fell silent...?

The hero boy and all of the other children on The Polar Express are there because they are doubting their belief in Santa, correct? So then why did the bell eventually fall silent for all of hero boy's friends and his sister? Wouldn't they, too, get their chance on The Polar Express? Or do only a few select children get to go? lol. Poor other kids don't get to go on believing forever. :(

Hmmmmm... Here's a theory: Hero Boy was on the cusp of believing or not believing on Christmas Eve. We see him right before the Express arrives checking for Santa and looking at magazines to try to convince himself one way or the other.

Maybe most children don't have that critical moment right on Christmas Eve but at some other point in the calendar year.

Is very bad to steal Jobu's rum. Is very bad.

I've seen the movie many times and this is what I got from it: If you remember where the Boy picks up the bell and he shakes it, it doesn't make a sound since he reached an age where he didn't believe in Santa and lost all faith in Christmas. When he said "I believe," the bell rang. So if those who still have faith in Christmas, the bell will always ring for them, although the same can't be said for those who lost faith in Christmastime. Hope this helps you

The Conductor says at the beginning of the movie that this is his critical year. And no, they are not all on the train going to the North Pole for the same reason. Billy learns to trust and makes friends. The Know it All learns to listen, and the girl learns that she is a leader and learns self confidence. The hero boy learns to have faith and believe. Not everything that is real can be seen. Also no, not all kids have a chance to go aboard the Polar Express, and not all get on. . . .

That's true, not everyone is invited for the same reason.

Here's what I think. When Santa tells him "remember the true spirit of Christmas lies inside you" - we all get to make the choice as we grow older to believe or not.

Im 37 I still hear the bell. Others choose differently....

reply

It isn't a question of believing of course any adult wouldn't believe. It's more of attitude. Lots of adults lose it, many do not.

I saw three dusters...inside the dusters were three men, inside the men were three bullets.

As a matter of fact, it is.

I am nearly 70...and I can still hear the bell ring.

70? Tinnitus?

reply

Actually, yes. But, for some reason around Christmas, my tinnitus seems to abate when I am around the bell.

Excellent! Merry Christmas sir!
