Dumbest part *spoilers*

They sneak into the lab to destroy the machine but when they find it isn't working he goes through the trouble to fix it?

Right..

Everything is in slow motion. Thank you Mission: Impossible!

If he hadn't fixed it, they would have eventually found the problem. He used it to see the future again so he could find a way to escape. If he hadn't fixed it and looked ahead, he might have died just like in his dream. Plus, it's a movie and they always repeat information, like showing him getting shot.

reply

What I don't understand is why, after using it to find a way to escape and setting it up to be completely destroyed, he didn't smash the screen or the palm reader or something with the wrench to prevent them from using it between the time he and Rachel leave and the bullet shot ignites the liquid hydrogen (or whatever that was)?

That would have been the logical thing to do, but the movie wasn't too logical. Afterall, Rethrick should have been able to prevent Jennings' plan from working since he had access to the machine from the time Jennings completed his task to near the end of the movie. He should have at least known that his plans to have Jennings arrested would fail. It was almost like the machine was intelligent or Jennings programmed it to give Rethrick bad information.

reply

At the beginning of the movie, he reverse engineers a monitor using technology that seems to be more advanced than the monitor that he ends up with. Stupid.

reply

Rethrick tried out the machine during its beta phase (which is why he is surprised that Jennings survived and escaped the FBI interrogation). Assuming the machine worked, he proceeded to wipe Jennings' memories. Some time after Rethrick used the machine and before the mindwipe, Jennings bugged the machine. (Don't forget that (Old) Jennings placed clues up to the morning before his mindwipe. He could have bugged the machine earlier that morning.)

There is a scene depicting Rethrick's first use of the machine after the wipe.

The dumbest part was when they didn't throw this horrible script in the trash can before starting to film. The only thing worse was the fact that I watched the entire thing.

The DVD extras address many of these questions. Woo wanted Uma to look beautiful, but Uma didn't want to, and Woo was embarrassed (but he gave in obviously).

The script was tossed, but they re-wrote it to enlarge the love story.
