I thought the idea of the line was that he intensely said what he was doing to underline just how innocuous and unrelated it was.
Subtext: I was eating pie. Perhaps the consumption of delightful confections create more temporal alterations than we realized. Has my sarcasm been illuminating enough, or shall I continue to discuss the meal prior?

Though, "delicious" would probably be more appropriate than "delightful" - sounds too hazy for a pie, although a pie can be a visual delight as well as a tasty treat.
Also, "or shall we also dissect/digest my previous indulgences?" would have a bit sharper edge and add a fun double-meaning, plus continue on your chosen verbalization style.
For the subtext, instead of repeating what he actually said, it might also be more advisable to iterate something like: "My body's nutritional need conspired with gastronomical lust for enticing and visually seductive sacchariferous substance forms, which led me to succumb to the temptation of purchasing and sensually devouring aforementioned fruity pastry, as the chronology of the situation clearly afforded such diminutive luxury."
(it also has a fun almost-double-meaning, with the word "diminutive", which resembles the word "minute", as we are talking about time)
But .. nah. Your version is actually probably better, I tend to use too many words and confuse the meaning in the process.
Also a good rationale for killing him off later. If his own actions hadn't led to that, surely Jimmy would have thought to turn on him.
