Just have to say...

Not meaning any disrespect to anyone who's gone through this, but it just made me have to laugh sometimes because Tom sure made one ugly woman!

I agree with you! I was trying to take MOST of the movie seriously....but when Roy had the fight at the wash basin with his co-worker over those earrings.....I almost fell off my chair!

"Great balls of fire, Mammy! They're MY portiers NOW! I'm goin to Atlanta, and I must go looking like a QUEEN!"--Scarlett O'Hara

I definitely agree...then again, he wasn't the best looking man.

reply

Well he's not gonna be gorgeous. I think the way he looked made him more endearing to me. It highlights a lot of our societal gender roles and stereotypes. I was rooting for him to be the best ugly woman he could be.

reply

I think some of it was meant to be kinda funny, in a way. Like in that kitchen scene thats shot all chaotically, hes in his pink bathrobe with feathered hair, and his sense of smell is heightened from the hormones, when he smells the spolied cream. Its like he was turning into a women, but mainly looked like a man.I was laughing, it just looked funny.

Jerry Springer would of had a good time with him....he did make one uuuhhhgly woMAN

(: Colonel William Tavington = SEXY:)

I guess Ernest Borgnine wasn't available to do this movie.

I think the fact that Tom Willkenson did not make an attractive woman only fueled the power of the story...it wasn't about how he looked...it was about being true to feelings that he had buried for years and being upfront about them, no matter how he looked.

reply

I think Tom Wilkinson is a very attractive man, but you're right, he didn't make a pretty woman. But have you ever seen "I Was a Male War Bride," with Cary Grant?

Cary Grant was an incredibly handsome man, all of his life, but he was almost frighteningly ugly when he had to pretend to be a woman.

The things that make men attractive just don't translate to what we expect from a female.

reply

well it made the film much more realistic. It's not as if only men that make attractive women are the ones who desire getting a sex change operation. His level of attractiveness doesn't effect his desire to be a woman

That was before Irma started picking his clothes out and helping him. What courage they both had.

The part where Roy was about to pull the trigger after his father let him have it was emotional. Obviously that relationship was long over and the guy was sick anyway. Still, hard to never have approval even when he [Tom] was a man. You just can't please some people.
