The subtitles on the DVD didn't work?

UGH! I tried to watch MERCI DOCTEUR REY but I couldn't get the subtitles to work no matter what! I kept messing around with it but they just wouldn't work. After having read what one IMDB user said about seeing it at a film festival and the French dialogue not having subtitles there because the director purposefully wanted it that way I'm wondering if maybe that's why I couldn't get the subtitles on the DVD to work? Is it supposed to be this way or something? If so then *beep* it! I don't know French! I want to but I don't! It's not fair to even let Americans see the damn thing without subtitles! I guess I have to return this to the video store without watching it then.

Am I the only one who couldn't get them to work?

It worked for me on region 1.

Really? I watched it on Region 1 and they didn't work.

I'm playing the disc from Netflix right now and the subtitles work fine. I didn't even have to turn them on.
