Loses because he plays with emotion
Flipping cards in a diner
A golfbet
Stealing money
Sell thing to pawnshops
Sneak out to play poker
He cheats
Win and loses again

He is a compulsive gambler, not a pokerplayer

When I first saw this when it came out, I disliked it. But watching it today on hbo it was much better than I remember, mainly for the reasons you just mentioned as to what the movie is about. And I can relate.
